Caring For Granite Tops
For its hard & non-porous surface, granite is a popular material to use when it comes to kitchen countertops. It has a relatively strong ability to resist stains and chemical harms. Even So, it requires proper maintenance to ensure the longevity of granite countertops. Caring for your counter tops includes both cleaning & sealing to keep them looking as good as new for years to come. Here are some tips on how to clean and seal your countertops without making any improper damage.
Clean Daily
Keeping the surface clean from spills is the first step in caring for granite countertops. If there’s a spill, remove it instantly & then rinse with warm water. This is all the more important when an acidic substance such as lemon, orange, or vinegar has been spilled.
You should wipe your granite tops with a soft cloth using a mild detergent each day. This will ensure any surface deposits are removed & keep your countertops looking new for a long time. Strong chemical cleaners should never be used, ’cause they can damage the sealant. You also want to avoid some powder detergents because surface of countertops can get scratch by these.
Several more daily care instructions:
- Always dust the surface of the counter - Rinse well using warm water after applying any detergents or cleaners on the granite - Do not use ammonia or bleach on your countertop - Sanitise the surface with a couple of drops of a cleaner that’s pH-neutral - Even though granite tops are often commercialized as resistant to heat, constantly avoid putting hot pots directly on them
Sealing Periodically
Sealing granite counter tops is another important part of a care routine as the seal enables the counter tops to retain the beautiful high gloss finish. Your granite top should be resealed every six months. It is often impossible to detect sealant wear, so even if it doesn’t look worn, granite tops should still be resealed two times every year.
If you want to avoid the hassle typically involved in granite counter top care, there are permanent granite sealers, or you may wish to consider engineered granite which does not require regular sealing.
