Affiliate Marketing Reborn
There has been concern lately among the affiliate marketing community about those members who have recently been banned by Google from using Adwords. Some have even gone so far as to declare it is the death of affiliate marketing on Google. Some industries have slashed the number of advertisers as a result of the Adword ban. Others are under the impression that Google is or is going to be banning any and all affiliate marketers from using its advertising service.
It is true some advertisers have been banned for life, but consideration must figure into the reasoning. Don’t jump to conclusions and assume its Google’s goal to rid the use of affiliate marketers, since they do thrive on Google. It appears that Google is targeting a very narrow caterogory of those advertisers, not all affiliate marketers. There is evidence to back up that statement.
These banned advertisers had one thing in common - they either promoted or were suspected of promoting a business opportunity product, or “bizz-opp.” To be more specific, they used Google’s brand in the product name. It is an obviously attempt to take advantage of Google’s name as a keyword, which would support its superiority and stronghold on the internet.
Affiliate Marketers who have been accused of this swear their material has nothing to do with the brand name. Even so, if there is any inpropriety suspected, it is offensive to Google and will lead to banishment. It is too easy to lead to lawsuits and attorney filings to protect the Google brand name.
Some non-affiliate advertisers have been caught in the ban as well, which is unfortunate. It has become a wide reaching search for culprits and ultimately hurts the “innocent bystanders” as well. Although Google is still willing to accept payments from affiliate marketers outside the industry of business opportunity space, they are still very cautious, adding “reviews” as an afterthought.
In reality, a case could be made the Google is creating its own Affiliate Network, as they actively sell most of its space to affiliate marketers, by adding the word “review” after it. You don’t need a product review website to use Adwords, but Google is recruiting super-affiliates and new advertisers. Remember too that Affiliates were originally called Publishers because they had already published tons of content on a topic before they became affiliates. In other words, there are many affiliates who own websites containing a mountain of content on a particular topic.
So it may be a little premature to announce the end of Affiliate Marketing on Google as we know it, just because a small margin of marketers are no longer allowed to use Adwords in promoting their business. The truth is, Google is mindful of the those marketers who tend to generalize and through other affiliates into the same catergory as those who want to promote shoddy products and price gouging programs.
