Avoid Certain Foods To Reduce Heartburn

Although the list of heartburn foods differ for every person, the following list are common to many different people. In addition to these foods, be sure to add to the list those foods that tend to cause heartburn for you.
High fat meats and fatty meats prepared with extra spice can trigger heartburn. Avoid marbled sirloin, ground beef, chicken nuggets and Buffalo chicken wings. The first three are high in fat, the last is high in fat and spicy.
You should also avoid foods which are high in sugar, oils and fats. Chocolate contains all of these ingredients for a really bad heartburn attack. Corn and potato chips, while not necessarily high in sugar, are high in fats. High fat butter cookies can cause heartburn as can brownies and doughnuts. Even salad dressings, especially those high in fat or fat and vinegar may trigger an attack of heartburn. In fact almost any fatty or fried food can trigger heartburn.
There are several fruits, vegetables and juices that are heartburn triggers. These include all of the citrus fruits and citrus juices. Here are a few you should avoid: orange juice, lemon juice, grapefruit, cranberry juice and tomato juice. In addition the the citrus fruits, remember that potatoes, especially when prepared with large amounts of fat, as in mashed potatoes or french fries can cause heartburn. Potato salad contains many of the heartburn foods in combination and can give exceedingly bad heartburn for some people.
Beverages that are high in acid concentration or alcohol should be avoided. Coffee and tea are highly acidic and can cause heartburn. Alcohol can relax the muscles, including the flap at the base of the esophagus which allows acid reflux. Wine combines the relaxing with acid.
Some people’s heartburn is triggered by pasta, including macaroni and cheese or spaghetti and marinara sauce.
Finally, there are some dairy products you may want to avoid. These include cottage cheese, ice cream, milk shakes and sour cream.
If you can find the trigger foods that are the worst for you, you may be able to eat some of the foods on this list without having problems with heartburn. Avoiding heartburn can avoid other health problems as you prevent acid reflux from damaging the esophagus.
