Teachers from UK and US travel abroad for teaching English to citizens in other countries. In order to address any medical emergencies during the overseas stay, they need to buy a suitable overseas health insurance policy. The duration of the trip abroad depends on the assignment which may be for a few months or extend to a year or more.

Long term or short term international health insurance plans can be purchased by these teachers based on the duration of the assignment abroad. The coverage benefits, policy maximum limit and duration of coverage varies according to the chosen international insurance plan and the insurance company.

If the required coverage duration is less than a year, international short term medical insurance plans are beneficial. These flexible plans cover individuals for as less as 5 days. If the duration extends more than a year, you can renew the travel medical insurance plans for about 36 months at a time. Short term international insurance plan provide coverage for children, spouse as well as dependents.

Short term overseas health insurance plans can cover medical expenses including doctor consultation, surgeries, hospitalization and emergency repatriation. Pre-existing medical conditions coverage is generally excluded from these short duration travel medical insurance plans. In addition, routine check-ups, dental treatments, preventive care tests and vaccinations are also not covered. Some short term international plans offer limited coverage during temporary visits back to the home country.

In case the overseas stay extends to more than a year, long term international medical insurance plans are recommended. Teachers can choose from two broad categories of coverage benefits - Fixed benefit and Comprehensive benefit.

Fixed benefit plans offer limited benefits and the coverage amounts are also relatively small whereas comprehensive plans cover more services and are beneficial in the long run.

Long term international insurance plans cover the insured during the stay at homeland also. In order to apply for the long term plans, teachers need to fill in a lengthy questionnaire with the enrollment form.

Some of the long term international travel health insurance plans cover the insured for additional benefits like evacuation and repatriation, maternity coverage, pre-existing medical conditions, preventive care and other emergency medical assistance requirements. Based on the services chosen by the insured, the premium costs are calculated.
