Ludlow Shropshire: A Border Beauty
The beautiful county of Shropshire on the Welsh borders is a place of gentle hills and rivers and rich in history. There are more than 32 castles and stately mansions peppering the verdant countryside. It is home to a number of interesting museums too. The Iron bridge Gorge museum and RAF Cosford are just two of many fascinating attractions you can discover as is Ludlow.
Over a century ago the famous writer Charles Dickens wrote his seminal novel A Christmas Carol which he was in the habit of giving Christmas readings of in such places as nearby Shrewsbury, the County Town to his many avid admirers. A poet laureate paid a high compliment to another splendid Shropshire town called Ludlow, which said he, is the prettiest town in all of England.Fitting praise! In the heart of town stands Ludlow Castle in all its ancient glory. Not surprisingly, this well maintained pile is a premier tourist site.
A poet laureate said of the ancient town of Ludlow ‘this is the prettiest Town in all England’! Most visitors would agree. The great castle overlooking the town centre is in excellent repair and draws a multitude of tourists yearly to Ludlow. Although this is not a huge town by any stretch of the imagination, amazingly it is home to over five hundred historical listed buildings, the majority being in the Tudor part timbered design.
A grand old church, St. Lawrences with its lovely arcane glass windows, rises benignly above the town in stately grandeur. The ashes of the well known poet AE Houseman are interred in the graveyard nearby.
The pleasant town square hosts several fine restaurants and pubs, as well as shops of different types selling a wide range of goods from home and abroad. The massive arcane walls enclosing the town are still standing. Only one of the seven original gates remains though, but that is in excellent condition.
The ancient bridge over the river Teme (a listed monument) Ludford Bridge, links the town together as does the main A49 road which links the M5 and M6 motorways. The vibrant County town of Shrewsbury is just a few miles away as is busy Hereford. London, Liverpool, Cardiff and Crewe have super fast rail links.
Whether you are seeking a short weekend trip or a longer holiday the County of Shropshire and more particularly the town of Ludlow is a wise choice. It is also very well positioned being close to the border for forays into the country of Wales, which is less than twelve miles away.
