Matlock Derbyshire A Brief Overview.
In the beautiful Peak district of Derbyshire, near its eastern edge is the small town of Matlock Derbyshire. This quaint old town was transformed many years ago by the introduction of the railways. Previously a small hamlet where the main occupations were mostly agricultural and lead mining, it became a major tourist attraction during the Victorian era and right into the twenty first century mainly due to its outstanding beauty and reputation for being a water cure centre.
The local inhabitants were mostly engaged in agricultural work with some lead mining thrown in.
When the newly invented railways network reached Matlock, which was already becoming popular via its spa waters and breathtaking scenery, the town was put on the map. It has changed, naturally, but there still is a little bit of the spa resort ambiance about. The fact that the lovely Hall Leys Park on the river Derwent is close helps.
Now Matlock being as it is the peak district has numerous nature and hiking trails that stretch into the hills and dales for mile upon mile. These are a magnet for sport and health minded folk from all parts of Britain and other Nations. The trails that wind through the Park are all well sign posted and easily accessible, crossing jaw dropping scenery and full of flora and fauna. The pristine waters of the Derwent reflect the impressive gorges that abound, especially the mighty limestone Derwent Gorge.
The impressive Derwent Gorge creates a fitting backdrop to the whole park area. The old paths in the park lead to many intriguing places, especially one that climbs up to the ancient St Giles Church. The view from the top of the trail is well worth the effort to climb, as is the interior of the building itself.
The Norman font and stained glass windows are especially interesting. The same is true of the Riber Castle remains on the horizon and the awesome Heights of Abraham.
The next cavern worth a peek is the Great Masson Cavern boasting a powerful and impressive sound and light display, where cavern walls are washed with technicolour light displays. A dinosaur fossil showcase is also at the attraction.
Without question this part of England is a fantastic place to spend an inspiring vacation or quick weekender break . There is a goodly variety of superb comfortable accommodation and plenty of regular public transport to the whole National Park area.
