Emergency Kits: Protect Your Loved Ones Today
Emergency kits are something we all know we should have ready and easily accessible, yet we rarely actually go through the process. And they can literally save the lives of us and our families. Putting together an emergency kit really is not that difficult a task.
You can find many different emergency kit lists on the Internet for suggestions on what to include in yours. Most items are pretty standard from one list to another. In some cases, items are added for the particular area, such as ones that are likely to have snow emergencies. The other things to think about are for your specific needs, such as for medical conditions or if you have pets that you will need to care for as well.
One of the most important things to have in your emergency kit is bottled water. We can survive far longer without food than drinking water. You also need to include food that will keep for a long time without spoiling, is easy to carry and does not require preparation such as power bars. Be sure that you also include enough food and water for any pets that you may have.
Commonly added items also include a first aid kit, matches, a radio that is operated by batteries or hand cranked, blankets, one or more flashlights and extra batteries. There are emergency blankets you can buy that take up very little storage space. Any prescription medicines should be put in the kit, at least in small quantities. A bit of cash is also a good idea.
You can easily put together an emergency kit for your car at the same time as the one for the house. They should have the same basic items in both. Do be sure that you have flares in your trunk as well. Also, plan for the type of weather you typically encounter where you live. For example, if you live in area that gets snow blizzards, make sure you have shovels, scrapers and kitty litter.
Your emergency kit items should be put into an easy to carry suitcase that is designated just for the kit. The last thing you want is to use it for a trip and not put the emergency kit back inside it. A suitcase that has wheels is often the most convenient.
It is possible to buy your emergency kit already put together or at least part of it. There are many variations from many different companies. They come in different sizes and with different items within them. You may want to at least start with one of these kits while you are putting your own together. At least the basics will be covered for your safety.
The kit should be gone through every six months to replace water and any food that is coming up on its expiration date. Check through the expiration dates on the batteries as well and change the ones within the flashlight. Batteries left inside can become corroded in which case neither they, nor your flashlight, will work.
There is no time like the present. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and get your emergency kits together today. In the unfortunate event that you need them, you will be glad you did.
